Saint Joseph in the Carpenter’s Shop by Georges de La Tour pictures for us Jesus as he watches his earthly father work. As the young Jesus holds a candle, we imagine he understands his future as the Light of the World.
- Take in the painting. Notice the structure, placement of people and objects, the use of light and shadow.
- What catches your attention? What do you think a conversation between these two would have been like?
- What thoughts and emotions does this image invoke within you?
- Joseph was willing to respond in obedience to God’s call even though it would be difficult to believe and lead to a more challenging life.
- How would your life be different if we responded in obedience to all that God has revealed?
