It’s Back to School Time!

It’s Back to School Time!

How many of these first day of school pictures did you see all over Facebook the past few weeks!  I saw tons of them and even though it’s fun to see everyone’s children growing up, it also hits home that it’s the turn of a new school year.  With that comes change in the household.  Some are ready and some are still dragging their feet, holding on to summer.  My household seemed ready this year and are off to a great start!  However, in the hussle and bussle of school routines and the beginning of sporting activities associated with school, I seem to forget the importance of quiet time with God and reflecting on how to be a better parent for my children.  Here are a few good reminders for back to school time:

  • Take time to pray for your children daily as they face many different challenges each day at school
  • Take time as a parent to reflect on how to more intentionally support your children during the school year
  • Start the day off with a healthy breakfast and prayer before school
  • Strive for stress free mornings, which may mean preparing some things the night before
  • Stay organized and work with your child to help he/she stay organized as well
  • Set a homework time after school so your children are aware of when you’re available for help should they need you
  • Communicate freely and on a daily basis with your child so they feel open to share their feelings or concerns with you.  It makes you more aware of what your child deals with and faces everyday.
  • Take time to read!  It’s a great time to spend together listening, discussing parts of the Bible.  If you have older children, encourage reading and challenge them to read their Bible and come together to discuss verses or thoughts of the day
  • Get plenty of rest!  The body needs it to succeed!

So, how is your mindset at Back to School time?  Stressful?  Struggling to help your child succeed?  Are you spending time with God and staying focused on what really matters in life?  Matthew 6:33 says, “But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things will be added to you.”
