But you are not like that, for you are a chosen people. You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show others the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light.1 Peter 2:9
We often think of ourselves as God’s children, beloved by our heavenly father. But we are also told in this verse that we are a “royal priesthood, a holy nation…” Not only are we part of God’s family, but we are all priests in God’s kingdom. As priests, we are Holy, set apart for God’s use in this world. Too often we think that our actions, our living without sin are what make us holy. But it’s God who marks us as holy, and then how we live should flow out of that designation of consecrated for Him.
