Quarantined: Day 9

Quarantined: Day 9

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

1 John 3:16-18

It’s easy during this time of social distancing to focus on ourselves and our own discomfort or inconvenience in this season, but Jesus invites us to look beyond ourselves and to the needs around us. Are there friends, neighbors, family members struggling financially because of job loss and furlough? Folks in your community who are particularly vulnerable to increased levels of poverty and food insecurity right now? As followers of Jesus, we are called to consider needs around us—to pray, advocate, give and serve–to embody God’s love in our community.

Today’s Journaling Reflections:

  • What are the ways you have experienced God’s tangible love in your own life? Particularly during this season of Covid-19 and social distancing?
  • What are some needs around you that you are aware of right now—perhaps it’s a need of a friend or neighbor or a larger systemic issue in our city that has caught your attention. If something doesn’t come to mind, pray, and ask God to reveal a need to you.
  • Take some time to pray and ask Jesus where you could give or serve in this season.
